Duna Teyrunna is strategically located in Pueblo Bello, in the Northern Andes. At the foothills of theĀ Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Duna Teyrunna lies within theĀ "Black Line"Ā that marks sacred Indigenous territory. With peaks reaching nearly 5800metres/19,000 feet, Colombiaās Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest coastal mountain range in the tropics. Dramatic changes in altitude, distinct compositions of flora and fauna are found here in abundance, hosting aĀ remarkable variety of over thirty ecosystems, home to many endemic and endangered species. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta hasĀ 36 distinct watersheds. These watersheds are formed by numerous rivers and streams that flow from the mountain range toward both the Caribbean Sea and the Magdalena River Basin. The region's unique geography makes it a vital water source for the surrounding ecosystems and human communities. Mining, among other extractive industries poses a significant threat to the unique biodiversity of the Sierra Nevada and the Indigenous reservation lands in Colombia, which are officially recognized as Resguardos (territories consisting of communal, inalienable lands). While Resguardos status safeguards ancestral territories and supports Indigenous communities' cultural and political self-governance, it offers no legal defense against mining activities. Moreover, growing pressures from expanding urban areas, tourism, and coal ports further endanger the biodiversity of Santa Marta and the well-being of its communities.
